The Best Golf Downswing Advice I Ever Received That Totally Changed My Golf Game

The golf downswing is important to understand and do correctly if you want to hit better golf shots. You could have the best backswing on the planet, but without the correct downswing fundamentals to compliment it, it’s useless. Now don’t get me wrong, the backswing is very important too. Generally speaking, a good backswing will tend to lead to a good downswing. You club will get into good position at the top of the swing so then it can swing down the plane line and stay on a good path as you approach the golf ball at impact. Here, I will go over the most important tip I have learned about the golf downswing and how you can incorporate it into your golf swing.

My newest swing coach from Milwaukee, Nathan Gray, told me that he would like me to “swing” the club down more with my arms on my downswing move. What I had been doing was steering or guiding the club too much with too much tension. This was cutting down my swing speed but it was also causing my swing to get out of sync. One important goal in the golf swing is to have everything come through impact together. The upper body, lower body, arms, hands, and club must all be together at impact in order to transfer maximum power through the shot.

Golfers who get too tight or tense from trying to steer the golf club can more easily get out of sync with their swing sequence. I was getting my upper body ahead of my arms too much. I either had to stop my body and swing with my arms only or I would hit a weak shot because I would only have my hands and arms to hit it. Instead, the move to correct it was to feel like my lower body stayed stable while my arms swung down faster. I consciously tried to do this and I started hitting the ball with a zip like I’d never had before. This is the kind of strike the tour players all have with their golf shots and I’d finally figured out how to duplicate it in my own golf swing.

It’s important to remember to maintain your wrist set and also allow your weight to start shifting to your left foot. This weight shift will happen naturally if you maintain good posture and knee flex. Getting a few fundamentals working correctly and applying the move of swinging down with the arms from the start of the golf downswing will really help you start crushing your golf ball longer and straighter.

The Best Golf Swing Drills To Perfect Your Golf Downswing

The golf downswing is very important to get correct. This is the last part of your swing right up until impact with the golf ball so it is crucial to be on the right track. There are ways to improve your downswing specifically. golf swing drills can be helpful in improving this area of your swing.

Two of my favorite golf swing drills for a perfect downswing will help any golfer greatly improve their path and hit more solid golf shots on a consistent basis. The first drill consists of taking your normal setup and then pulling your right foot back, almost a complete foot width. Keep your posture and everything else the same. Then simply hit balls on the range this way. The goal of this drill is to get you swinging the club down more from the inside on the backswing.

This above drill will also eliminate or combat any over the top move that may occur which is a common or top fault golfers can struggle with. Good players sometimes swing the club too much from the inside but this is rarely a beginner or high handicapper fault. Most beginner golfers instinctively try and get the club to the ball as fast as possible, thinking this will somehow generate more power. It actually decreases power because it cuts off more of the swing arc and makes the path of the club too steep.

The second drill to improve your downswing is to make swings and actually hit balls with your right arm only. The purpose of this drill is to fix any kind of stuck feeling or getting jammed up coming into impact. The arms must be extended pre impact position in order for the club to get in the right position. Golfers who have a hard time releasing the club or have too much tension can benefit from this drill.

One key concept in a good downswing is to maintain your wrist set or angle while you swing the club downswing towards impact. This wrist angle is called lag in the golf swing. The purpose of lag is to generate extra power and allow the hands to lead slightly at impact. We want the arms to straighten on the way down so there is full extension. Combining this extension of the arms with good wrist set will allow for a better downswing and more solid shots.

Top 3 Tips to Stop Slicing Your Golf Ball

There is nothing worse than being able to hit a golf ball 300 yards but only to see it drift off to the right almost all the time. Slicing the golf ball is arguably the one thing that most amateur golfers hate and would do anything to completely avoid it. When golfers hit a slice, it is often a combination of bad swing habits, bad timing and an overall bad swing. A lot of golfers tend to play the game without any knowledge of how to properly swing the golf ball and after weeks of “practice,” that bad swing is now engraved in the bodies. However, a good amount of golfers will get away with these bad swings and will occasionally shoot low rounds but will crumble under pressure.

How to Improve My golf swing and Stop my slice- Stance

Often times it is your initial stance that will dictate the type of swing that you create. A golfer that tends to open up and “play” for a slice will most likely slice the ball. This is because their body is already open and will cause an over the top action. This over the top action is what causes the ball to spin to the right and even causing your drives to be shorter. One of the first things that you can do is to tell your mind that you will not slice the ball. Golf is all mental and when you start to set up for a draw, your mind will eventually start to make changes.

How to Improve My golf swing and Stop my Slice- Swing Path

Changing your path however will not be the only step as you will need to focus on your swing path and plane. Though there is not much difference between a one or two swing golf plane as they both work, the important thing to remember is that you must end up in the “slot.” This is where all your power will be and will cause your ball to have that piercing right to left ball flight that professionals always have. The top of your back swing may not be as important as what most teachers say as it is what happens on the down swing that matters the most.

How to Improve My golf swing and Stop my Slice- Practice

As simple as this might sound, as long as you practice the correct stance and swing path, it is inevitable that you will forever lose the slice. Try your best to video tape your golf swing and to ensure that you are always in the slot during your down swing. Though the top of your back swing should look like it is pointing towards your target, it is more important that you find your way back to the inside to promote a sweeping action.

If you are serious about improving your golf game and would like to learn how you can stop slicing, you should take these three tips into consideration. Keep practicing and you will definitely start to hit the ball farther and longer without having to ever worry about the slice.
